Today, I am here to tell you about The Shifter. It is the first in a series, and is
about a girl named Nya. She has a younger sibling named Tali, but Tali always acts
older. She is a healer, that’s a person who can draw pain from someone, and store it in
a special stone. Nya has the same power, but it is deeply flawed. She can’t transfer the
pain to the stone, only to another. Nya knows she must keep her power secret, but one
day she makes a mistake, and discovers someone who wants to take advantage of her
powers, but is also willing to pay big money for it. Then, suddenly, Tali disappears,
along with many, many others, and Nya must decide how much she is willing to
sacrifice to save her sister. Is she worth the lives of so many others? Nya must decide,
before it is too late. So starts an epic adventure, and along the way she discovers the
power of friendship…. But also other powers she can’t explain. And so many other
questions and problems need solving, such as; What makes her so different, and why
her? Are there any others even remotely like her? Why are so many people
disappearing, is there a connection between them, who’s doing this? And, most
troubling of all…. How long will it be before the leaders can’t cover for the children
anymore, and the public finds out…?
The Shifter is a very heartfelt book, sometimes sad and sometimes happy. You
will cheer for the characters, scream at them, and cry for them, sometimes all at the
same time. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10. I highly recommend this book for grades
5-9. It can be a little fierce at times, a little heartbreaking, a little intense. You can feel
every emotion every character feels. I liked it enough that I am going to search for the
rest of the series. I hope you do too. Happy reading/writing! Remember, the people of
today write the future’s bestsellers! Good luck.
