The Fault in our Stars

The Fault in our Stars
by John Green
Review by Rhagan

The marvelous book by John Green that shows you another side of a love story that does not have a happy ending.

The book is about hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters; they are two star-cross lovers who go on a journey to meet their favorite books an apperial afflicion author of Amsterdam. The only problem is Hazel grace has stage four lung cancer and she goes through her ups and down with Augustus to meet the author Peter Van Hoution.

John Green made everyone's heart break in this novel. Hazel Grace is a calm, non elaborate person but Augustus was the opposite he was elaborate and he has the best sense of humor and he was also an energetic guy.

This book was amazing in every single shape and form this book can be for tweens, teens, and adults and if you're in one of those groups I suggest you read it.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

On the second book of the Chronicles of Narnia book series, we read about the journey of four siblings as they venture out in the snowy sheet of ice known as Narnia. The youngest sibling, Lucy is the first to discover the magical world, along with the stubborn and hotheaded Edmund, the second youngest. But even with Edmund’s teasing and other antics, it doesn't take the others long to finally discover the magical land of Narnia, while getting into pretty sticky situations in the process.

The story starts with a playful game of hide-and-seek inside of a professor’s weird house.
Lucy hides in the wardrobe, soon sinking into the wardrobe and ending up in Narnia. She soon
discovers a nice faun named Tumnus, who feeds her while simultaneously telling exciting
stories, and spares her life, knowing the evil queen wants a human like her as a stone statue.
Edmund soon goes with Lucy to the icy land and meets the evil queen who unusually cares for
him and feeds him high supplements of Turkish Delight. Full of food, he returns back home with
Lucy. When asked about the land due to Lucy mentioning it earlier, he replies by simply saying
it was just her imagination again, and Lucy is deeply hurt, knowing Edmund did see the place.
The two oldest siblings, Susan and Peter shame him for reminding her of the place and saying it
was her imagination. They go visit the professor to see what's wrong with Lucy, and he reminds
them that there could be another world. As they return to the old house, a mean house tourist, Ms
Macready, returns with others. They dash away, hiding in the wardrobe, but discover Narnia.
Edmund reveals that he did see the place, and they shame him further, not talking to him on the
trip. They talk about the evil queen and finding the charred and destroyed the home of Tumnus,
finding out that he was taken to the Queen’s prison. They find a helpful beaver, who feeds them,
and talk about the brave Lion Aslan, the only one who can stop the queen. Edmund strays from
the group discovering a huge arch. He went inside, finding stone statues, and the queen who he
told everything the others were planning to do. Meanwhile, the others venture to the Stone Table
and look for Aslan.

I think this is a really good book to read. The plot unfolds well, with many twists to keep you reading. The characters are great, and Edmunds moments of betrayal and faithfulness to the evil queen are what keep me reading. The only problem I have with the book is that the author doesn't add many sensory details, which on some parts of the book have me lose a bit of interest. But it's a really good book otherwise and I really do recommend it.

Have you ever imagined falling into a well and being stuck in it for twenty-four hours? Well, in this spectacular novel, you will get to step into Kammie Summers trouble, she is stuck in a well and can’t get out! This wanna-be new student at school wants to be popular. She tries to join the popular girls club, but first she has to do a test to see if The Girls will let her join. The first test was to cut her hair so she could fit in with the rest of the club, the second test was to stand on the boarded up well and sing the national anthem. But, little did she know she would end up falling in!

In the anxiety filled novel, Kammie is stuck in a well, trying to figure out how to escape. But when she realizes there is no way of escaping, she gets flashbacks from when she was younger, thinking about bad situations that have happened and comparing to the situation she is in now. She also thought about how much happier her life was before her dad went to jail, and before she had to move to Texas, since the government had to take their house. Besides getting flashbacks in the well, she talked french to her imaginary goats who were at the bottom of the well. Will someone save her? Or will she die alone in the well? Read the book to find out!

This book was very fun to read and to find out how Kammie goes about her life stuck in a well. When reading the book you’ll get to explore all of her personal life and past experiences from childhood. I recommend this book to all readers who are in need of an adventurous and fun book

Even though some times are tough, people can learn from them and Ponyboy has learned that throughout the book. He has witnessed the loss of his two closest friends and the tears of his friends and family. Also, Ponyboy has witnessed the death of someone in his rival gang, the Socials. Throughout the conflicts, Ponyboy understands that everyone has problems, that the Socials are people that have feelings too, and that love can be shown and take many forms.

Ponyboy first learns that Greasers and Socs both have problems. They are both disrespected and judged, Greasers and Socs have expectations; if they don’t follow them they are soft. “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped…” They are mistreated, misunderstood, misinterpreted, and sometimes judged by society. Socs have some of the same types of problems since their expectations are set high. Sometimes Socs are forced to go with the group; also Socs hate others because others hate them.

“You would have saved those kids if you had been there,” I said. “You’d have saved them the same as we did.”
“Thanks grease,” he said trying to grin. Then he stopped, “I didn’t mean that. I meant, thanks, kid,”
“My name’s Ponyboy,” I said. “Nice talking to you Randy.”

Ponyboy finally understands how labeling can cause hatred, fighting, rivalry, division, and killing. Ponyboy realizes that stereotyping and giving someone a label is wrong. He realizes that all the conflict and fighting between Greasers and Socs is bad and meaningless and that a place without conflict and division between people is a better place to be.

Ponyboy learns that even through tough times, everyone, including Greasers and Socials, has problems. Ponyboy Curtis learned that even love and care can take many forms. Ponyboy has been through some tough situations and has still learned many valuable lessons. Although no one would like to go through challenging events, people can still learn from those hard experiences.

The Outsiders was a really good book and it was really action-packed. Reading the book, I clearly understood what was going on in the story, Everything in the book was so well explained and detailed. After ending the book I still felt interested in Ponyboy’s life. I saw things from a different perspective, from Ponyboy’s way of life, living in a gang, being labeled as violent, and being judged by society.

Deliver us from Normal

Deliver us from Normal
By Kate Klise
Review by Claire

This book is about a 11 year old boy named Charles Harrisong, who has a big family with 4 siblings and 2 hardworking parents. They live in a town called Normal, Illinois. Charles thinks his family is by no means normal, they have a long list of ways to make Charles feel embarrassed at school and other places whenever he ran into his classmates.
Charles doesn’t like his last name, the yellow brick house his parents rented with no air conditioning, he also hates the cheap clothes that his mom buys at Bargain Bonanza all because his classmates laugh at him. He is very nervous and tense at school and sometimes he cries. His parents are working really hard to make ends meet because of the size of the family how they are poor and look weird to others, but in their hearts they are nice, loving family with good sense of humor. His older sister Laura is a talented artist who is good at drawing and always encourage Charles. His younger brother Ben talks in a hilarious way and makes everyone laugh. His other 2 sisters Clara and Sally and nice and cute. His parents are always supportive and protective of their kids. I think the family is normal except for the fact they are struggling financially.
Charles's sister Laura decided to run for 7th grade class president, which some cruel kids at school made some really mean comments on Laura’s election posters, Laura was heartbroken. The parents decided to leave Normal, and buy a boathouse in Alabama. What will be their new life look like? How would they sail across the ocean? Where would they end up with? You have to read the book to experience excitement and frustration in their new adventure.

Kate tells us a story of a 11 year old boy partly in hilarious way with some stressful and sad moments. She makes us think about “What makes us normal?” Does money and owning stuff makes us normal? Does being popular at school makes us normal? Or sticking with your family no matter how poor and supporting each other is normal? This is a sad story, but the author told it is a hilarious and a heartwarming way, I definitely like this book.

The Magician's Nephew

I read the book The Magician’s Nephew. This book was one that my brother (again) recommended for me to read. The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, magic, and a bit of suspense. It is confusing in the beginning, but by the end, everything makes sense and you think, “Oh, that’s why that happened, it leads to this.” I love books that have the right amount of suspense, adventure, magic, and don’t make sense until the end.

Digory lives with his aunt and uncle and very ill mother in London, England next door to a girl named Polly. One day, Polly wanted to show Digory her ‘cave’ she made in the rafters of the adjoined houses of her street. They wanted to venture into the uninhabited house on the other side of Digory’s house, but did not calculate the correct distance between the houses, so instead, they ended up in the attic of Digory’s house. Instead of finding a regular storage area that attics usually are, they found a box of green and yellow rings, a fire blazing, and… Digory’s uncle. Digory’s uncle seemed, at first, pretty nice towards the children, but when Polly asked if she could go home in time for supper so her parents wouldn’t worry, Digory’s uncle gave Polly a yellow ring out of the box. As soon as she touched it, she disappeared. Digory’s uncle explained to Digory that he was a magician with magic powder that his mother gave him, but he did not know what it was, but soon found out that some of the powder made things disappear and the rest brought them back, or so he thought. He gave Digory one yellow and two green rings (one for him and one for Polly). When Digory found Polly, they were in a forest that was so quiet, they could “hear the trees growing.” They tried using their green rings to get back, but it did not work. They found the forest full of shallow pools and when they wore the green rings, they could go through the pools and into different worlds. In the first pool they went into, they found a world with a red sun (which means that it is an old sun and therefore is an old world). They went into a building and found a collection of large statues and a bell with an inscription that read, “Make your choice, adventurous Stranger;/Strike the bell and bide the danger,/Or wonder, till it drives you mad,/What would have followed if you had.” So Digory rang the bell and awoke one of the statues that told Digory and Polly the story of the world and why it was deserted; there was a war and the awoken statue, Queen Jadis, destroyed all who lived on the world. After her story was finished, Digory and Polly returned to the forest via their rings, but the queen tagged along and returned with them. She was weakened by the forest, though because she performs dark magic and the forest is made up of good magic. So, when Digory and Polly headed back to their world, Queen Jadis tagged along again to regain her strength. Will Jadis perform the same magic she did in her world on Digory’s and Polly’s world?

This book was really awesome, though there are ones I have liked better. Most books can’t really compare because they are just enough different. I would definitely recommend this classic to people of all ages.

If you like historical fiction I have the book just for you: Saints. This graphic novel takes place in the early 1800s in Asia, when Christianity was not common and was not accepted by many Asians. Four Girl has never had a real name. Her name was given to her as a temporary name. No one thought she would live over a year.

Four Girl grew up in a family she thought she didn’t belong in. She thought joining Christianity would help her find a new family. When her family found out they were enraged with disbelief.
She was shunned by her family. As a result, she put a hex on her grandfather. Four Girl had no opinions but to live at the church as an orphan.

At her new home, she was given a name. A named that symbolize her new faith as a Christian. She worked with children for many years until the Boxers invaded.

This book gave me a close feeling of how Four Girl felt during every emotion. Although Four Girl was a simple girl, her story was very intriguing. I would have appreciated the book more if Four Girl had more of a detailed backstory. The sadness of Four Girl's life gave the story a lot of depth. Overall Saints was full of twist, and you never knew what was going to happen next. Four Girl never had it easy. She had to fight for what she wanted out of life.

Things are going along as usual in the town. Then someone “a monster” named Ursula comes and starts torturing humans. She called sirens “Ursula’s minions” and they stared singing, which made the humans ears bleed, but she didn’t want them to die, just suffer. So she said a spell. Then a glow in the sky over the ocean brought one of the most powerful people ever King Triton. Ursula hated her brother ever since he abandoned her at birth to humans. When Ursula was very young her father found her at sea. He raised her as his own, but the village found her weird. She keep getting the urge to jump in the ocean. One day she did and she then grew tentacles. The villagers then new she was a witch. As they put her on the wood pole. Right before they were about to watch her burn her father came in and saved her.

Ursula then watched her father get torn apart by the villagers. She then jumped into the ocean and never looked back. Well, back to the other part of the story. Triton and Ursula hated eachother, but Ursula was needed by the odd sisters Ruby, Martha, and Lucinda. They are a set of three witches. They needed Ursula’s help to find there other sister Circe. She went missing a couple days ago they also had a magical cat named Pflanze “who played a pretty big part in the story”, but if Ursula was going to help them she needed there help with killing Triton so she can get revenge. Her plan was to get Ariel “because she found out that she has fallen in love with a prince named Eric” so she would get Ariel to sign a paper so she could kill her by law, but Triton would do anything to keep his youngest daughter safe. So then Triton would take her place and Ursula would kill him.

Will Ursula’s plan be a success? Will the odd sisters get Circe back? Read the book to find out. I will give this book five stars and everyone who likes Disney should read this book. It will totally change your thinking of The Little Mermaid. This book has blood and one curse word that Ursula says, but if you don’t mind that than you should read this book.

Today, I am here to tell you about The Shifter. It is the first in a series, and is about a girl named Nya. She has a younger sibling named Tali, but Tali always acts older. She is a healer, that’s a person who can draw pain from someone, and store it in a special stone. Nya has the same power, but it is deeply flawed. She can’t transfer the pain to the stone, only to another. Nya knows she must keep her power secret, but one day she makes a mistake, and discovers someone who wants to take advantage of her powers, but is also willing to pay big money for it. Then, suddenly, Tali disappears, along with many, many others, and Nya must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to save her sister. Is she worth the lives of so many others? Nya must decide, before it is too late. So starts an epic adventure, and along the way she discovers the power of friendship…. But also other powers she can’t explain. And so many other questions and problems need solving, such as; What makes her so different, and why her? Are there any others even remotely like her? Why are so many people disappearing, is there a connection between them, who’s doing this? And, most troubling of all…. How long will it be before the leaders can’t cover for the children anymore, and the public finds out…?

The Shifter is a very heartfelt book, sometimes sad and sometimes happy. You will cheer for the characters, scream at them, and cry for them, sometimes all at the same time. I would rate this book a 9 out of 10. I highly recommend this book for grades 5-9. It can be a little fierce at times, a little heartbreaking, a little intense. You can feel every emotion every character feels. I liked it enough that I am going to search for the rest of the series. I hope you do too. Happy reading/writing! Remember, the people of today write the future’s bestsellers! Good luck.

Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep

Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep
By Liz Kessler

I read the book called Emily Windsnap and the Monster from the Deep. This book was very creative with fantasy, and imagination. The setting and the main character’s environment kept my imagination going.

This book is basically about how Emily and her family moved to a new habitat and what Emily’s life is like because in the beginning of the book she kind of talks about what her new home is like and describing what it is like out there . Later on in the book Emily describes how she discovered that she was a mermaid. She says when she went swimming with her school as soon as her legs hit the water pink and green sparkling lights started lying around her legs and a tail had formed since Emily’s dad is a merman that is what gives her the ability to turn into a mermaid and since her mom is human she is able to have legs.

Some strengths from this books was how love; this was shown when Emily was and her friends came to her rescue. Another strength was family. Emily’s parents loved her very much. Some weaknesses was adding more to when Emily was taught the “sirens of the sea” which is kind of like a whale sound. Although Emily was taught how to use it from her father, she never used it in the story.

My rating for this book is 9 because I really liked this book.I found it to be pretty with how the story came together. One thing I found interesting in this book is that when ever Emily’s tail transforms pink and green lights flew around her and the fact that she is a mermaid.
